First- do you want to be a professional player? I mean, the range between a community band and the Boston Pops is pretty severe.
In my humble opinion- performance degrees- and the performance career and lifestyle is something for the performer- for people who are called to play, who can't imagine doing anything else- for which music fills a void that nothing else could. It's not an easy way out- and not a glamourous life (though, I'm not sure that exists anymore).
Regardless of what ANYONE says- you need to major in what YOU love-

listen to your heart.
