I had 2 extra sets manually drilled into my R-13 (1988) 15 years ago by Leonard Zopf (Philly) -- to date; I've had no problems with chipping/cracking, splinters or stripped threads. My scenario was a little different than the average bear: 1) I was on an unusually heavy custom barrel; overall horn weight plus excessive chop time was causing sharp pains in my thumb and wrist -- I was well on my way to carpal tunnel syndrome. 2) Flipping the thumb rest, trying screw-type adjustables (new on the market at the time) and neck straps weren't helping. 3) I had just begun experimenting with a right hand/thumb "re-positioning method" by Elsa Verdehr that required a higher thumb rest set -- specifically, a technique improving fingertip dexterity, weight distribution and minimize joint fatigue. As for the procedure, if it's done properly at screw-depth width and length it shouldn't damage the instrument. Re-measuring, the 2 sets were drilled 1/8-inch "above" the factory holes and in succession, the 2nd set 1/4-inch up from the originals. v/r Ken
