Okay.. It is such a pain to search for these recordings of... 1) Bartok - Contrasts, 2) Brahms - Sonatas 3)Brahms - Trio for clarinet, cello and piano.
Generally i like more conservative playing.. Darker tone, no vibrato, ect...
thanks in advance!

How do you like David Shifrin's playing? I think his recordings of the Brahms Sonatas are gorgeous.

james,
I know you're not the biggest stoltzman fan, but as far as the trio, I think one of the best recordings is the Stoltzan, Emanuel Ax, and Yo-Yo Ma recording. I think it's a BMG Red Seal record. Good CD!

1) Goodman, Szigeti, Bartok... the Original Cast. Bartok wrote "Contrasts" for this trio, and in listening to them play it, it's no surprise. If one could have only a single recording of this item, that's it.
Regards,
John

I second stoltzman's brahms trio recording, but again if you don't like vibrato you might not want to own this one. i don't particularly like a lot of vibrato myself, but once i got past that it was great to hear what he does with the phrasing. plus, i mean, his trio-mates are amazing as well. maybe find a friend who owns it and listen if you don't want to buy it, its worth a listen.

I would agree with JMcAulay concerning Goodman/Szigeti/Bartok recording - an essential one to own, if not purely just for historical reasons.
For the Brahms Sonatas, I tend to favor the first recording that Leister did in 1984 with Oppitz on piano (Orfeo). Leister has recorded the Sonatas on three different occasions, but his first reading is clearly the better of the three. Leister's sound has become a bit thin on his later recordings, but this early reading is full of dark coloration, intensity, and beautiful phrasing.
For the Brahms Trio, I like the performance of József Balogh (Naxos). He exhibits beautiful control, and perfect blending with cello. His phrasing is first rate.
There are also some very fine vintage Brahms performances to be familiar with. Three that come to mind, and are enjoyable for different reasons, are Wright/Goldsmith in the Brahms Sonatas, Cioffi/Mayes/Berkowitz in the Brahms Trio, and a very expressively controlled 1982 recording of the Sonatas by a (younger) Richard Stoltzman ...GBK

Re the Brahms, forget your conservatism and go for Alan Hacker. Alternatives also not mentioned above are Kell for the trio and Klocker for the sonatas.

For the trio, I definitely second Stolzman/Ax/Ma as well. afa the sonatas are concerned, you should give a try to Paul Meyer/Eric le Sage (RCA red seal).

For the trio, try Gigliotti's recording (available through Amazon or www.clarinetworld.com). Stolzman's playing is way too superficial to my taste.

Harold Wright's Brahms Sonatas with Peter Serkin are also outstanding. They are on Boston Records.

I like the Alfred Prinz recording of the Trio on Eurodisc far beyond any other records I have heard. This is a great Brahms record of all time.
Mr. Prinz and Harold Wright have also done fine recordings of the Sonatas by Brahms.'
My favorite Bartok Contrasts is one I have of David Glazer with members of the Budapest quartet.

I am not a fan of Stoltzman's tone or liberal interpretations, but his recording of the Brahms Trio is superb. Too many people play Brahms brightly; Stoltzman's interpretations is very dark as it should be.
