 Open or closed hole flutes
Author: mls

I've been playing flute for about 4 or 5 years, and I never heard of any of those terms till I went on this site. What is the difference between open and closed hole flutes? Thanks!

an open hole flute has 5 of the keys with the center holes cut out of them. They lay underneath your 2,3,4th finger on right and 3,4th on your left. It gives a better tone and on some of the trills and high notes you can use then half open/half closed with your finger. A closed holed flute has all the keys closed, which limits your possibilities. Here is a pic of an open holed flute: "http://i8.ebayimg.com/03/i/01/8a/02/45_1_b.JPG" and here is one that is closed hole: "http://i8.ebayimg.com/02/i/01/02/96/51_1_s.JPG". TAKE OUT THE "" BETWEEN THE URL!

The other important thing to think about when buying a Flute is what it will be worth when you need to up grade. Open Hole Flutes with the B Foot always hold there value better because they just look like a Pro Flute with Pro Flute Options.
The cost is not much more for these options and the benefits are many more than just resale as listed on the post before.
