 Flute, piccolo and difficulty...
Author: Guillaume

Hi!
I want to learn to play a musical instrument. I was first attracted by piccolo, but a friend told me it was more difficult to play then flute, and that usually people start learning flute before piccolo. What do you think about it? I am really attracted by the sound the piccolo produces...

Your friend is correct. The flute embouchure (blowing) is easier to control on the flute since it's larger than the piccolo. It's nice to have a goal, i.e., start learning the flute with playing the piccolo as your goal. You may actually become a good picc player faster by starting with the flute. Once you are comfortable that you have the flute embouchure under control, try the piccolo. If having to start on the flute means that you will not play any musical instrument, then by all means start with the piccolo, but be prepared to work hard and not be discouraged. The fife is somewhat like a piccolo, and many fifers start without flute. Good luck.

I started flute as a child, played all thru college, then had a 23 year lay off, started again 8 years ago. I played piccolo in marching band in high school, and again now. I do agree that you should start out on flute. Pic is fun, but harder. I also find that once I have been playing pic exclusively, that it is harder to go back to flute when I'm tired. Switching back and forth does get easier. I had difficulty just playing the flute when I started up again, but it all does come back with time. If you are over 50 you might see if there is a New Horizan Band in your area. The band was started originally in NY by the Eastman School of Music, but there are many in the US now, and more being formed. It is a great way to start an instrument, because there are people like you, just starting and like me, starting again. It's really fun to play in a group.

If your just starting I would start with the flute. It can be really hard to get good sound out of the piccolo. Plus- If you ever want to play piccolo I hope you can stand really high notes. Good luck!

I started playing Piccolo at the age of 4. It is a matter of what you truly what to accomplish. I have a studio of 42 flute students , a Masters degree in Performance. If you what to learn piccolo, buy a reasonably playing one, and enjoy. brian

i would suggest starting with the flute... i've been playing for seven and a half years... and i love it.. i recently moved onto the piccolo.. it's almost like taking training wheels off of a bike for a while.. but it's really fun once you know how to play...

Even though I don't play the Flute, the Flutes it right in front of the Clarinets in Band...and I hear everything the our Band Teacher says to them...at my school there are NO piccolo players till Honors band, and my friend plays the Flute and she was choosen to play the piccolo for Honors..and she had never played the piccolo before, so I figure that you should do the Flute before the Piccolo.

the flute has the same fingering almost as the flute. it's not exactly the same, though, so your friend shouldn't learn to play the flute first. i know, i taught myself to play the flute, and my friend plays the piccolo. i play the clarinet in band, though (1st chair). what school do you go to?
