You will not be able to use an A clarinet in a concert band unless you are an extremely good player. It is pitched a semitone lower than the standard Bb. Since all the band music is written for a Bb instrument, you'll have to transpose everything by a semitone. If the music is written in keys which are simple for band instruments, they will be very difficult on the A instrument. For example, something written in C will have to be played on the A clarinet in C#, which is not an easy key.
