 clarinet and science

Let me make a pitch for science being presented as part of the conventional clarinet lesson. While in high school, and before, I struggled, as do many clarinetists, with the problem of biting and squeezing high notes; this went along with other bad habits. While a junior I did a science project on the clarinet and it really turned the lights on to cause me to produce better quality pitches. Concepts such as closed tube vs open tube; harmonics, wavelengths, frequencies, comparative tube lengths; vent holes; register key vs octave key and why; odd overtones and even overtones or both; etc. This may seem like a list for the high school physics student or the university Phd candidate but they can be comprehended by the curious clarinet student and especially so if a science buff. Let me reiterate...this really freed up my playing.
