I think a good way to figure this out is by singing. Now I know we're not all great singers, but give it a shot, and try to figure out where you'd naturally take a breath.

phrase a piece. just take a breath every 4 or so measures. it depends on your piece. usually if all your notes are slurred ina slow melodic pice take breathes in the middle of a measure ever few measures. if it's a fast peppy piece, ever 6 or so measures would be good. if you can't make it that long, don't worry, go as long as you can. and that could be something to work on in the future.

"Normal" phrasing is every 4 bars. . . but most songs don't have normal phrases. Phrasing doesn't coincide with the tempo, but rather the motion of notes. Where are the notes headed? What seems to be the "goal" note? Slurs ARE a good indicator, as are repeated patterns, sequences, and sometimes dynamic markings.

amanda is right. Every note in a pice of music is either going somewhere, ariving some where or leaving somewhere. many times in an 8th note or 16th note run, all the notes are going somewhere. often times it would be apropreate to crecendo through runs such as those. large dynamic contrast can help out phrasing quite a bit.

Do you crescendo going up a run or just down?
