My friend decided that she wanted to play the flute and asked me to teach her. How can you describe a flute embouchure to someone who has had no previous experience in music? What do you recommend going over first? Thanks for your help!

The first thing to do is take the headjoint and teach the student how to make a sound with only that. Do you play flute? If you do, show the student how you form your mouth. I was tought to say "O" for higher notes and "E" for lower notes. Its not compleatly correct, but it works for beginners. Once the student can make a good sound on the headjoint, add the rest of the flute and start teaching basic notes on the staff, like Bb and C. Make sure they know how to correctly hold it and to curve thier left hand so that they can easily play C.

Thanks! I do play flute, and I've tried showing her but she can't quite get it. I'm sure that 'o' and 'e' will help! She figured out how to put it together on her own, and then figured out how to at least make a sound on the headjoint- but holding it to the left. She can get a good tone holding it to the left, but barely any sound at all to the right. Have you or anyone else ever encountered this, and how is it fixed? Thanks a lot for your help!

It is becuase of how the flute headjoint is designed. I dont know the exact science but I do konw when your friend gets the correct embourcher she will be able to make a sound when holding the headjoint to the right side.

I remember when my friend was teaching me to play flute, she described the embouchure as if you were blowing air on wet fingernails... ::shrugs:: it worked for me.

I learned from my band director who was a former flutist that the air should condense a triangular form at the center of the mouthpiece. I have some suggestions for your friend. Tell her to experiment with the position of the lower lip on the mouthpiece, the embouchure, and the altitude of the air stream (this gets more critical when playing notes; well, embouchure gets also) when looking at A MIRROR! A mirror is very very important. She will improve more on playing the flute by a mirror. Trust me.

hey, I play the flute and my girlfriend does too and she read this post when she was over at my house. She said that it's kind of like when she givs a bj but to make your lips narrower. I don't know about that because i'm straight (i play football), but that's what my girlfriend said to tell you. hope that helps
