how does certains parts of a clarinet (or even an oboe)being wood while others are still plastic better than an all plastic instrument? why do people buy instruments like this and why companies make them? what makes having the middle joints of a clarinet made of wood and not the barrel or the bell made of wood even be a good idea?

Well the main parts of the body that resonate (I think) are the joints ... and a plastic bell and/or barrel just make the instrument lighter. I'm assuming you are referring to student models, because generally they're made lighter for em, less strong players.
