Wow, this is really awesome! I am so happy that this website exists. I really need some great advice about teaching clarinet to a rising 6th grader. She decided just a few weeks ago that she wanted to learn how to play clarinet. Her sister asked me if I would teach her. How should I approach this task?! I'm a novice!!! Help me!

One thing to teach her is about the theory of band...like what does Bb instuments mean and other music theory like that! And scales are really good to teach. Good luck! *i am also about to give private lessons too this fall, but for piano!*

Start with the proper way to assemble a clarinet. That way she won't damage her instrument.

start with the basics
real basics.......get her a good method book,
an instrumental & a band method (if she is joining one) is essential if shes gonna take it seriously.
start with a little of the history, famous players and pieces and stuff etc.
then approach her with the assembling the clarinet
the proper way to hold the instrument, position of fingers,
eliminate all bad habits once she starts to learn on how to hold the clarinet!
start with the basics

then comes the correct embouchure (VERY IMPORTANT) which
must be strenghten with long tone practises and so on,
before proceeding make sure she has formed a definite and strong embouchure.
remember that in order to teacvh you must first be a good player yourself. if you already are you may not be a good teacher anyways, so do your time researching for information regarding the topic and always feel free to be teachable! all the best to you and your student!

The most important thing a teacher can tell to a clarinet student is the correct way of tonguing. She can learn all the fingering from books, but it is very easy to get into bad tonguing habits, such as not tonguing at all.

Also the embachure is extremly important to get right the first time. its hell to go back to the beginning after years of playing if you had a crappy beginning teacher. (I would know...)
