 tuning blues.....

Tuning is such a big problem in a band, i definitely needed to bring the topic to this forum. Well, one of our band instructor tells me that tuning by one single concert key note is not sufficient to in tune always in a band, so constant practise of long tones on all notes and a lot of experience and ear training is trully important, so my question is, what is the best way to practise tuning by ear?

Most of the time to save time we will use an elctronic tuner to do the job, so what are the drawbacks and all?

The flute section (mostly the new members) in the band always goes out of tune in, say like half an hour of playing, why are they especially inconsistent?

Electronic tuners are the easiest way to tune, but the biggest problem i've seen is that people don't warm their horns up before they go to the tuner. they tune, then when they play they get some weird tuning issues later because their horn has finally warmed up. and as far as i know tuning by ear is a skill that you have to learn by yourself over some time. whichever instrument you play, listen to see if your in tune, and when someone else plays, just play a corrisponding note, if theres the ripples in sound, the your not in tune. hmm, does this make any sense?

as the instruments get warmer making the instruments get sharper so while your plying you have to adjust thoughout the whole time you r playing.
