 right thumb pain (flute)
Author: Diane Bouska

Hello, everyone,
I am a relative beginner on the flute. I played some when I was in junior high and have picked it up now and then for the last 30 years. Now I'm 44 and have been seriously learning for the last year or so. I am starting to get tendonitis in my right thumb. I play maybe 2 hours a day, not all at once. As of last year I started holding down the Eb key (teacher told me to, but my teacher back in junior high never mentioned it). Now my right thumb is rigid under the flute and lines up under the F key. I can't figure out how else to hold the flute and keep it stable (and it's still not too stable). Does anyone have any suggestions to prevent this injury that seems to be in progress?
Thanks so much,
Diane

I don't have the answer, but --. It seems like you are holding the flute properly. Your teacher can verify your position. I'd say you are holding/squeezing the flute too tightly. You have to learn to relax the grip - balance flute/rest it lightly on the thumb. It takes time though. If your thumb starts to hurt, stop playing and open and close it/hand to loosen it up. Don't play if it hurts. Get professional help if it persists. Check Health Issues and Concerns on the following web site.
