I've played the flute for 5 years, and the violin for 3 years. Now, I've decided to try another instrument. I've narrowed my choices down to the viola, clarinet, cello, alto or tenor sax or the oboe. Could you tell me which is a good instrument to try next and the reason?

Ask yourself what type of music you like most (e.g., classical, jazz, etc.), next most, etc. Then, which instrument(s) do you most enjoy hearing when your favorite(s) tunes are played. Which of your choices are on the list? You should also consider your future musical plans. For example, if you plan to become a professional flutist, then you don't want to play an instrument(s) that can de-sensitize your embouchure, or cause you to make mistakes due to instruments being fingered differently. If you plan to be a music teacher, then --- . If you are in it for fun, then you have greater latitude in you choice. I saw some parts of Woody Allen's movie "Wild Man Blues" yesterday, and I really liked the music he played with the clarinet. It made me wish I could play the clarinet, but the fingering is very different from the flute.

Suggest you try the instrument you feel sounds good to you, and would be the most fun learning. brian
