 oboe bells

I was just wondering why there are different kinds of bells. Every once in a while I look on ebay and there will be oboes with long bells, a little shorter, and small bells. I'm sure it would change sharpness/flatness but why are there different sizes? Could someone explain it?

I cannot give a precise explanation but i am sure that a different oboe bell will give a different tone because the oboe bell is the main factor in determining the oboe's tone.

one reason there is a difference is because on the student model in order to play a low Bb you have to put the bell between your knees and on the advance model you have a key to do that. so the bell is shorter on the advanced models

The bell has quite an impact on the sound of any instrument, it's actually quite amazing. I've tried two bells of the same model on my instrument and they were completely different. It all depends on the relationship of the width of the bore the the length of the instrument. instruments with smaller bores will be longer, and instruments with wider bores will be shorter. However this usually is only a matter of millimeters, not even, for both bore width, and the total length. It is most like the pictures you are looking at are of different sizes, or they taken at funny angles or what not.
The only other thing I can think of, is that maybe you found a picture of an oboe "musette" a smaller oboe in D, which would obviously be shorter.
