 I need some help

There is a Youth Orchestra in a neighboring town that I would like to join. You have to audition for this, and to audition you must perform an etude, all the scales, and sightreading.

It's not the music I have a problem with, it's my age and the instrument. The information says ages 15-21, but on another part it tells me age is NOT a primary condition. I am two years too young, but do you think I could still audition and get in?

I have played the clarinet for several years, and I am pretty decent. I recently dropped it and picked up the bassoon. I am not the best, but alright at it. If I want to make the symphony, I'd have to be on the clarinet. Is this a good idea? I can still play it.

I could really use some advice. Thanks!

These youth orchestras are extremely picky. They won't tend to let just anyone in. How long have you been playing the clarinet at say a grade 4 level? Grade 4 being the concert band syllabus level rating, songs like shenandoah, alvamar overture, emperata overture. The one near where I live plays well at grade 5, and studies grade 6 pieces. If you can get in, great, but don't be disappointed if you don't. The thing with orchestras, though, is that there aren't usually very many clarinets, usually 2-3, and that's it. So typically you'll have to be the best of the best to even get a chair. However if this is more of a concertish type band there might be more spots for a clarinet.

Good Luck

Saxy Boy

Thanks for the response. It is a more concertish band, I believe--I'm in eighth grade, been playing for four years now. I made honors band with it in my second year, so I'm pretty decent. I, the tired, miersable and homework-loaded creature that I happen to be (^^) forgot to put "bass" clarinet on there. I started the bass last year, whilst I was still on the clarinet. Thanks for your help!

Saxy Boy is right about the "pickyness". They will need 2-3 clarinet that have good skill lvl. Important thing for them is the sound you can get out of your clarinet, scales, and how well you can produce the sound(loud-wise).

I just started playing the Clarinet today and I don't know how to play it. I know how to put it together and blow in it but I can't play any songs because I don't know the notes. I was wondering if you could send me pictures o aol about which keys are which notes and can you give me a little advice please.Thanks,bye.
