ive been given the opportunity to play bari sax in concert band, and i want to know a little bit more about it. I play alto right now, and wouldnt mind switching. but it want to know some more things about it. how hard is it to play? what are the parts written for it like??? i really want to know as much possible aout it before i decide whether to play it or not! tell me everything u know!!

Baritone saxophone is easier in some respects and harder in others in comparison to alto. For one thing, your embouchure is a lot easier to develop and that makes it easier to have good tone on the bari right from the get-go. The hardest part is having the breath support and being able to hit the low notes and also having the proper lip control to make the high notes play in tune. The written parts resemble the low brass section of a concert band, but this will vary from song to song: On one song you might double the tuba for the WHOLE song while on another you play along with the trombones, have your own unique melodies or even double the flutes, it all depends. One thing I will warn you about is the delicate nature of the keywork. While the bari is somewhat large, that doesn't make it stronger. The bigger the instrument, the more complicated the keywork so BE CAREFUL with the instrument PLEASE!

Also, if you're into jazz, the bari sax is the foundation of the sax section, and can have some really kicking parts.
