 Alto Recorder Question
Author: babypatten
Date:   2002-06-28 12:50

My 4yo and I are teaching ourselves to play the soprano recorder and doing rather well...but the sound of the instrument is really bothering my ears and head. I considered changing to an Alto recorder if the fingering remains the same, because I still need to be able to follow along with my daughter and teach her where to put her fingers. Any suggestions???? Please email me directly.

Thanks,

Brooke

The soprano recorder is a C instrument, which means when all the holes are covered, a C comes out. The alto (treble) recorder is an F instrument, which means when all the holes are covered, an F comes out. You wouldn't be able to do the same fingering and have the same note. I suggest you buy a set of hearing protectors, found at any hardware store, Lowes, Home Depot, Sears Hardware. They look like plastic earmuffs and are very easy to slip on and off, and they will save your head from the resonance frequencies of the two instruments. I use them in the woodshop, at work, and I used to don them when my babies went on crying jags.
