Doubling as a sax and oboe player???

Would it be difficult to play both of these instruments, or should i focus on just one?? The reason for this is that oboe is slightly more challenging than saxophone( My grade 9 class is playing boring old grade 3 music) and as we all know TENOR saxes always have to play crap at this level, so to challenge myself a bit more, I thought i'd play the oboe.

Any suggestions would be helpful

Would it be difficult? Well, don't be fooled, the oboe and saxophone are two completely different kettles of fish for sure. I've seen lots of people on here trying to say that just because the fingerings are the same, it should be easy to change from one instrument to the other. That would be true if just moving your fingers on the instrument were all there was to playing it. But that is not the case; incidentally the reason all those instruments have the same fingerings is because they were made that way in a fingering system called the "Boehm" system--after the dude who came up with it I assume--not because they are similar to play.
If however you do want I challange I would say go ahead and at least give it a shot. Heck you'll get much better parts playing the oboe than you will playing tenor saxophone. And what's more it opens you up to being able to play a bunch of orchestra music too.

I play the oboe, and when I started playing alto sax for the marching band at school, my biggest problem was embouchure. Before you start actually playing the oboe, work very hard on trying to get a good sound out of the reed. It will help a lot. It is a challenge to play both instruments but it is very rewarding. Have fun
