I've been playing the oboe for 3 years now. I've gotten into All-County and All-District before (school bands)so I can play very well. I've been using the school's oboe but I want to get my own now. Any suggestions on a well playing oboe with a fair price?

I would suggest looking at Fox oboes. I had a Loree (AK) and a Fox 450 at the same time on approval, and really the Fox sounded very comparable to the Loree except on the high notes above the staff where the Loree had a slightly sweeter tone. If you will be playing in the marching band in high school you may want to consider a Fox 330 or 300. The 330 is a very popular model that is very well regarded for tone quality and intonation and either of these is plastic so that cracking won't be a problem. The 330 does not have several of the keys that the 300 has, but I'm not sure which they are anymore. Fox also makes a wood oboe (400) and an oboe with a plastic top joint (450) which is the one I bought. The 330 is quite reasonable and can often be found used. Following are some good web sites.

Seriously-
ebay is a good way to find instruments for less. HINT: ask the seller alot of questions about it before you bid!
