I'm still new to the bassoon world, and am gradually learning the standard things a bassoonist is supposed to know.
I'm currently preparing for a concert in September, and am getting comfortable with playing high A's for the first time. I even have one high B, too.
I wanted to know, what is the common range a bassoonist is expected to be able to play comfortably? Generally speaking, how high do bassoon parts go most of the time?

Hi Jaysne,
Parts that go above high C are quite unusual, and even high C isn't that common.
Most of the time you won't see anything above high Bb or B.
There are a few pieces with solos containing high C or above, e.g. (from memory)
Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra has high C
Carmina Burana has high C and C#
Rite of Spring has high C, Db and D
Ravel Piano Concerto has high C# and E
West Side Story Symphonic Dances has high F (!)

Thanks, Chris. I knew about Rite of Spring, but of course, that's an anomaly.
I'm starting to get used to the high A. Playing up there is getting kinda fun.
It's nice to know that I'm almost to the top.
