Quartet for the End of Time
Author: Anonymous

Greetings all,

I am currently listening to an all-star recording of Oliver Messiaen's Quartet for the end of time. It features Gil Shaham(violin), Jian Wang(cello), Myung-Whun Chung (piano), and Paul Meyer(clarinet of course). This recording is amazing and put together well, especially for a group of all-star soloists. It is quite the fantasy to listen to and takes one's mind on a journey of sound and soul. I was wondering if anyone else has a reccommendation on a recording for this piece. OR if anyone else has a chamber music compilation of all star soloists coming together to form one beautiful entity of music they would like to boast about or reccommend.

Thanks.

Hi Anonymous,

Sounds like a winner. I have heard Gil Shaham in concert, and I think he is one of the very best violinist in the world. Although I am not familiar with him, I have heard nothing but praise for Paul Meyer's playing.

My version of the piece was recorded in 1975 by the quartet Tashi, consisting of Peter Serkin, piano, Ida Kavafian, violin, Fred Sherry, cello, and Richard Stoltzman, clarinet.

This work is an amazing piece, but not something I listen to every day. I take my Olivier Messiaen in small doses, although I am very fond of his Turangalila Symphony. My version, by the way, is by Myung-Whun Chung conducting l'Orchestre de l'Opera Bastille.

Hi Anonymous,
I haven't heard the recording you have; sounds like I need to. I have 2 recordings of this piece with Hakan Rosengren as the clarinetist. They are both wonderful and I highly recommend giving them a listen. I don't know the other musicians' names (I'm at work and don't have the CD's handy). -LynnB

I have this recording and this is the best vesion of that piece on the market currently.
I know there is an other version with Loriod on the keybord, but I never heard it.

I have heard a great performance of Harold Wright do this live which will always live long in my memory.

I have seen James Campbell do a great job of this as well live, and can say this music in concert is truly a finer way of experiencing it.

DD

I have a few recommendation for you :

1st Myung-Whun Chung version

2nd An other all-star recording with Ida Kavafian, Peter Serkin, Fred Sherry and Richard Stoltzman

3rd Messiaen at the piano with Pasquier (the cellist who first played the piece at Stalag 1n 1941 with Messiaen)

Do you know other GOOD versions ?

I have the one with the Amici Ensemble (Joaquin ValdepeƱas on clarinet), Naxos 8.554824. An enjoyable performance.
