I am auditioning for a bass clarinet opening in about a week and I wasn't given a specific repetoire list and they told me to just choose 2-3 excerpts. I am going to do the excerpt from Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite, I think. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I want to vary my excerpts between technical and musical and high and low. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Ravel's Daphnis & Chloe, Suite 2, or the Symphonic Metomorphosis by Hindemith, would be sure to catch their ear in the way of the technical aspect.
If you don't already have the Michael Drapkin book entitled "Symphonic Repertoire for the Bass Clarinet", it has many common excerpts used in auditions.

Hi Marci - Did you ever recieve the old Martin Ligature [if I have the right Marci!]? Re: the Grofe, in our Comm. Band we play a "Salute to F G" which has the On the Trail triplets and other pieces, some as nearly a duet between BC and oboe. A story I have heard [truth?] is that Toscanini was trying out BC players and didnt like any of them, until a fellow figured out that Tos was hard of hearing in the low tones, and he played it "full-bore" , was complimented and got the job!!! Both Ravel and Hindemith are fantastic Bass Clarinet pieces! I've played both and they really show off all aspects of the instrument, Good Luck!~*therese
