I'm confused. I found through two sheet music companies that Felix Mendelssohn wrote two sonatas for Bb clarinet and piano, but other sources tell me that there's only one sonata that he wrote. One of the two that I found is in f minor and is Op. 4. The other one seems to be more common among sheet music dealers and is in Eb major and without an Opus number. Did Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy write both of these, or am I just getting mixed up with two different composers?
Thanks,
tiger

Mendelssohn's Op. 4 is a Sonata for Violin and Piano in f. If you have found it in a clarinet version, it is probably a transcription. He did write a Sonata in Eb for clarinet and piano which, according to my Schwann, dates from 1824. That would make Mendelssohn 15 when he wrote it. As you note, it has no opus number, though a few of his earlier works do.
For a listing by Douglas Briscoe of his works:

Thanks Jack. That really clears things up. The only thing I'm wondering now is why only some of Mendelssohn's pieces have Opus numbers. Why not all of them? Can anybody answer that?
