Does anyone know the reed strengths that Vandoren recommends for the M30 mouthpiece?

From what i have heard, what works best with this mouthpiece are Regular vandoren fours.

I feel reed for M30 (442 hz.) should be slightly harder than that for 5RVL (442 hz.) and very slightly softer than that for M15 (13 series). Nevertheless, a very reed-friendly mouthpiece.

Mark,
The reed strength that Vandoren recommends may not necessarily be the best choice for you. Trust your ears and your embouchure to tell you which reed strength would best suit your personal needs.

Vandoren recommands :

traditionnal blue box 3/3.5/4 (as well as for 5RVLyre)
V12 3.5/4/4.5

But what you should try the first is B40...

Where can I get vandoren M30? I tried my local store, woodwind and brasswind, and brook mays -- none of them have it. Is it on the U.S. Market?

Lily,

Try:
<A HREF="http://www.store.yahoo.com/1stopclarinet/vanb45bbclar.html"><B>1stop clarinet shop</B>mouthpiece page</A>(sneezy sponsor).

There is M30 listed, but I don't know the availability of M30-13.

BP (F) and all,

What is the difference/similarity between B40 and M30?
I heard that M30 has been developed modeling after B40,
but it seems to me M30 has quite different concepts since
M30 prefers much harder reeds (V12, strength 4).

I thought that the beauty of using B40 is that I can
employ relatively softer reeds (V12 strength 3 or 3.5
for me) without sacrificing the sound quality.

The M30 is something of the new MYSTERY piece in the Vandoren line. Not too many players have played them and even I wouldn't mind giving it a chance.

I have been on the B40 for years and would not change this as my piece of choice.

Apparently BP F above likes the B40 as well.

I would like to know the measurements of the M30, from what I have heard it is a long long facing, which could be quite nice...

If the M30 permits the tone of the B40 with a harder reed it may be just the thing for North American players.....
I myself like the fact the B40 allows for use with a lighter set up- and to boost it further it has a really dark sound.....

I also wonder who is the designer of the M30?

Jon Manasse, prof at Eastman I believe.

It would be good to get the specs for this mouthpiece (M30).
I assume that Vandoren may actually want to sell some.
