Hi, I've been observing the sneezy bb for some time now, and this is my first posting. I'm hoping that someone can enlighten me about the various Pruefer models. I've done numerous searches and have come across somewhat random mentions, but what I'm really looking for is a list of the the models that Prufer produced and their quality relative to one another. By the way, I've a Silver Throat and a Silver Throat Deluxe, both very fun to play. When I play one of them my better half pipes in from the next room "are you playing the silver throat?" Now that's what I call a distinctive tone.

i am also a big fan of the silver throat! i have 2 deluxes. these indeed sound as good as any expencive pro horn . they also have the biggest most powerful sound of any clarinet i have ever played. i use mine in big band and for outdoor ligit work and people always comment on the lovely sound . i heard pruefer went belly-up around 1970 or so.

I currently play on a wood Pruefer from (approximately) the '30s, it has an articulated G#, extra ring for the l.h. ring finger, and the little resonance vent key which is closed by the l.h. sliver key -- I really like it. I've also restored a few of the hard-rubber (with metal-lined upper joint) Silver Throats (non-"Deluxe"), and both were pretty decent but not great, IMHO.

Pruefer quit making clarinets in the 1970s due to the fact that their clarinet factory burned. They haven't made clarinets since. The company did make other products (I don't know what though) and stayed in business. I do not know if they are in business now.

I think I read in the New Langwell Index that Penzel Muller bought up Preufer before 1930.
