 C clarinets
Author: Kenneth Ozimek

I'm looking to purchace a C clarinet. I have so much trouble finding and adequate substitute oboist for my woodwind quintet that I've decided to try hiring a clarinetist to play a C clarinet instead. Could you share some of your thoughts and experience with the instrument. What models are good to consider. Also, I've been reading about the Llyons C clarinet. They are very inexpensive . Some professional players have said they could be used in a professional situation. I've been thinking about trying the Noblet 45-C to save money as I would not like to spend more than $1500 if Possible.

Thank You,
K. Ozimek

The Leblanc Esprit is very nice but it runs about 2K. I have also heard it's being discontinued. Patricolas run maybe a little less and have a good reputation.

I own and play a Noblet 45-C and am totally pleased. It sounds great, even when I play it. At the time it never occured to try a few horns before I purchased, but I KNOW I lucked out with this one. The other clarinetist in the band plays a Patricola C; it sounds excellent also.

Neither sounds much like an obe, but I guess you expected that....

I've heard good things about the Buffet E-11 that can be had for far less than your budget allows. Haven't played one though . . .

I highly recommend the Patricola C clarinet in grenadilla wood. It costs about $1,898.00 new and is an exceptional instrument.

I've done a bit of oboe part [sight] transpostion onto Bb, not difficult if in "reasonable" keys [and with no Cb's or E#'s to tussle with!], but prefer to use my old Conn plastic C [with shortened mp tenon to get up to 440+] for the slightly "brighter" tone quality. A good friend borrows it for his church orch use frequently. You might consider playing the part on Eb cl for "brighter-yet", my older Noblet is a good one!!. We have made use of transpositional computer methods to use various cls for other insts, such as alto cl for viola, just try that one!! Don

I own and play a Buffet E-11 and it is a remarkable clarinet for the money--I paid about $800.00 at International Musical Suppliers in Des Plaines, IL. Great sound, good intonation (better than my pro-line Yamaha effer) and extremly even scale from bottom to top. Before you buy a more expensive model, I recommend trying an E-11--you could save yourself as much as a thousand dollars and play just as well. Hope this helps--Good Clarineting!!!!

I've play-tested the Buffet E-11 and have to agree it's a good instrument. I recommend you get the extra Chadash barrel for it, it makes all the difference in the world! Just ask Lisa about it if you call International Musical Suppliers (my source for my Patricola as well).

I don't care for the Buffet Prestige C or the Leblanc C. Play on them and see if you can get the altissimo notes in tune with a standard mouthpiece and the normal fingerings.

Brad Wong at Western Michigan University has a Patricola C in ebony and says he likes it. This seems to be a good mix of moderate price, good construction and playing qualities.

I have a Stephen Fox C and like it. There will be a long wait, but the price should be quite reasonable for a custom-made instrument. Plan on going to Toronto twice, once to pick it up, and once for adjustments after a month of playing on it. Order his special throat b-flat mechanism and an adjustable thumb rest. You can also have him make it with a low D, left-hand D#/G# key, short barrel, gold keywork, or anything else you can dream up.

I just purchased a Patricola C (grenadilla wood) clarinet from IMS. When I placed my order I asked Lisa to try out various CL7s and to pick out one for me. I told her that I mostly play jazz and some contemporary classical music. I also told her that I'm looking for a dark and rich woody sound. In trying out the CL7s she found one that she said is unusually dark and woody sounding. When it arrived she enclosed a note with the following message about this clarinet: "...a lovely woody warm quality. Scale (w/45 mm barrel) is excellent and it has a wonderful focus and projection". My initial impressions of this Patricola CL7 are that this is one sweet clarinet. I'm very impressed with the richness of its sound, good intonation, and overall quality construction.

I'm currently using my Morgan RM28 C clarinet mouthpiece on the Patricola. It's clear to me that I need to use a Bb mouthpiece on it. I confirmed with Lisa that she used a Bb mouthpiece in trying the various CL7s. The C mouthpiece works well in the low and middle ranges. But, I'm not happy with it in the upper range. The mouthpiece doesn't have enough chamber volume to get the kind of response that I'd expect to have. Clearly, it's the mouthpiece and not the Patricola. Ralph Morgan is currently making a Bb RM28 mouthpiece for me. When I get the Bb mouthpiece I'll add a follow up note about how it plays.

Finally, I'd like to say that there is no comparison between a Patricola and a Buffet E11. I've gotten good results with an E11 (in particular with a Morgan C mouthpiece). But, the Patricola is in a different league. The Patricola is everything that I've been looking for in a C clarinet.

I received a Bb RM28 clarinet mouthpiece today from Ralph Morgan. Hands down, it sounds better on the Patricola than my C mouthpiece. Intonation is superb with the 45 mm barrel and the sound is wonderfully full and rich. I'm extremely happy with this set up.
