Just wondering what date/era the Unversel Savana brand made saxophones during. The list on the site doesn't seem to know - does anyone here?

Perhaps we need more than just the brand name. If you have the instrument in your possession it might be helpful to list all the markings you can find. Look for numbers, letters, tick marks - everywhere you can. Describe the material it's made of, brass, nickle-silver, plastic, etc. I'll put my 'people' to work on it right away... sometimes we get 'lucky', sometimes we strike out -- but we never give up

I presume you asked on the SOTW (Sax On The Web) site already? In my years of fooling around with older and lesser-known brands of saxes and clarinets, I've never heard of "Savana" --- but if anyone knows about it, someone either here or at SOTW should have the answer.

OK, here's all the information I've been given, and I'll also put it on the SOTW website.
Universel
Savana
paris
729
brevete - bottom of bell
248.840
soft brass
crock is welded to the body - saxophone is one piece totally inclusive of the crock
No b flat on the lower register
goes to b natural
no use of the 2 index fingers to get the note of middle b flat; the only way is the fingering of a plus the right hand alternative fingering
all 3 palm notes are available - no high f sharp
the instrument came in a location of a large box that had space slotted that took the 2 section of a b flat trombone
That's what I was told, so there ya go. See if anyone can get anything from that.

Are we talking about an alto, tenor, C-melody, or possibly something else? Well, as least it appears to be pretty old : No low Bb but three palm keys and no 1-1 Bb. hmmmm. Soft brass - are you sure of that? That's definitely not the 'norm'. Doesn't say whether there's any lacquer left, not that it matters much... so, okay, I'll consult with my favorite collector/historian, see what turns up, if anything. It's definitely an interesting horn all right.

I visited collector/tech/historian this afternoon. It was not the best of days to do so, Saturdays are usually very busy... enough said. I'll get back to him next week, possibly Tues., and will report back. His assistant has not heard of Universel-Savana. I'll post here, which will by then have moved on to 'earlier messages' (?) or, if something startling turns up, I'll make it a new topic. At this time I'm beginning to doubt much more will turn up than Mark Charette has posted above. I'll ask other acquaintances however, as our paths cross. As I said earlier, we (well, some of us) never give up
