 Baermann question¿
Author: elmo lewis

On the cover of the Baermann method books it says that they were composed by Carl Baermann,Jr. ¿If Carl is Heinrich's son, how can he be Carl, Jr¿ Grove's Dictionary says that Carl, Jr. was a pianist. So, why do the methods say Carl, Jr.¿ Is it just an error¿

As far as I know, the Baermann method book has been written by Heinrich's son Carl from 1864 to 1875. Carl was also a keen pianist on top of being a great clarinettist. Carl's father, Heinrich, also had a brother by the name of Carl (our Carl's uncle then) who used to play bassoon. This might be why our Carl is called Jr, to avoid the confusion with his uncle.

One of the earlier styles of keywork, and fingering system, were also named after a Baermann. One of the improvements of the Baermann system over the earlier Alberts was that the low E/B, long key, provided an alternate F#/C# by lifting off the F/C key giving you a choice of two which was carried on to later Alberts and modern Oehlers have this fingering standard. I think he may also have been responsible for adding in the left hand chromatic Eb/Bb key.
