It was a dark and stormy night when I got my Bulwer-Lytton clarinet. Can anyone tell me something about it?

No, actually the (semi-)famous author Edward George Bulwer-Lytton was referenced in a recent thread, which (together with the thread about good vs. bad writing) reminded me that there is an annual writing contest dedicated to him.

If I can do this right, here is the url:

http://www.bulwer-lytton.com/

Lots of good fun here. Scroll down to the "History of the BLFC" for background, then check the 2002 winning entries.

"What does this have to do with clarinets?" I hear someone type. Nothing, unless some among us choose to enter this year's contest and incorporate our favorite instrument.

Still, lots of laughs, which is a good thing -- even for clarinet players.

This has the makings of an excellent thread.

It was a dark and stormy night. Somewhere, rolling in with the thunder, came the shrill, banshee-like sound of a clarinet, a Rico three blasting on a 5JB. Vibrato shook the night, beagles howling in counterpoint. Beethoven rolled over in his grave beyond the fog-shrouded moors.

As the ghostly wail of the clarinet pulsed through the night, . . . .

Someone else can take over from here, assuming, of course, that they're not completely nauseated by now. Ken Shaw, perhaps?
