Currently on e-bay a seller of an Alto Clarinet made this remark:
"It plays to low E which I consider a real plus because it makes the instrument lighter than an alto that plays to low Eb. Besides in over fifty years of playing I have never encountered a low Eb in band or chamber music for alto clarinet"

Funny, that's been my experience, too. But maybe that's because I never played Alto Clarinet.

I've never seen any Ebs, but having the note means you get a decent E/B, instead of a fonky bell tone. Desparate spin from the eBay seller, I'd say.

No.

As Ken points out, mainstream makers put the Eb key on there for a reason.

I have seen low Eb for alto clarinet in clarinet quartet music and also clarinet choir music. I haven't played it much in band, but I think there may have been one in the music for a summer band I played in during June.

I've marched with a bass clarinet - that was heavy! Alto would seem easy, in comparison.

When you play a Bari sax which only goes to Bb and you need an A you can stuff your knee into the bell and get the A. I guess you should buy that alto clarinet and whenever you need an Eb just stuff your foot up there into the bell, should work fine and save you some money. I suggest wearing lime green sox for their effect on stage... goes well with my Tux! If you are playing while standing it gives the effect of a Flamingo taking a nap.

Man, I think I will bid on it!

L.O.L. Terry, but if you'r 6foot two and standing, I have visions of playing "DEAD BUG" while flopping around on my back!

Both my Selmer alto [only play it infrequently] and bass have the low Eb's and I make sure they are playable. The only written low Eb I now have is in the C. Dragon arr't of "Am. the Beautiful" [bass], but I do "drop the octave" to assist the bassoon at times. Don

My EEb (contra) alto does not have the low Eb, and I miss it all the time. My bundy has the low Eb, but the note is not as good.

At the 2000 Clarinetfest in Norman, Oklahoma, Joseph Messenger
directed the clarinet choir; he picked out a piece called
Dances Of Atlantis where the alto has a 5 measure solo that
ends on the low Eb. I'm glad my alto plays down to that note.
