 Rick Sayre....
Author: James

This really isn't a question for you all, it is more of a comment really annoys a few people when they see.. I went to rick sayre to have him work on my A clarinet concerto which isn't brannenized and I just wanted to say that his work is just amazing. He some how transforms the nasty key work of a leblanc clarinet into something very easy to use and only with tunning up the horn. I can only wonder how good his work is if he were to compleately overhaul the clarinet.

I didn't realize it but it seems chicago is the center of the clarinet universe with our cso players and IMS, brannen, Sayre, Sam Gordon ect... I am so glad to be here :)

Chicago is a lovely place, I was just there this summer to visit family. The CSO is a fine orchestra, with Combs, an old Interlochen campmate, and Yeh, a former student from the Aspen Music Festival.
The repairmen, mouthpiece makers, and all the fine craftsmen there add to the musical riches of Chicago.
But getting back to NYC is always a thrill. The Philharmonic with Drucker, The Met, NY City Opera with Koch & Hartman, NY City Ballet with Flax & Kriegler, Broadway with the "best of the best", the studio guys, and the hundreds of talented men & women who make up the largest free-lance musicians work force in the world, plus great teachers, repairmen, musical instrument dealers & shops, the music stores on 48th Street, and record stores all over the city with every conceivable kind of music available, and music publishers with worldwide distribution; it has been an honor and privilidge to be part of this great musical scene for the past 40 years.
I don't know where the center of the music universe is, but I must be close here in NYC. JJM

I can say definitely that the clarinet center of the the universe is most assuredly NOT located in Washington, DC. This is the town of many talented amateur and part-time musicians who are way too busy doing other things, and of sparse and disinterested audiences who for the most part couldn't care less about live classical or jazz music. Many musicians such as myself are here "all dressed up, but no place to go". James and John, consider yourselves lucky (or, more likely, smart!) for living where you do.

David -

How's Loren Kitt playing these days? I've always been very impressed. Is the National Sym. worth hearing?

Are Philly and Baltimore too far to go when you're all dressed up? Philly should be fascinating this year, with those 3 fabulous guys rotating.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw

Loren Kitt is undoubtedly playing well as always, but the National Symphony (IMO) is rarely worth going out of the way to hear -- they never really have played on the level of the majors, and are generally outplayed by most of the better 'second-tier' orchestras (e.g. St. Louis, Dallas, etc.). This is just my opinion (probably a minority opinion) --- I just wish this town had an orchestra to really brag about; but then again, as I said before the audiences around here don't care about such things, they're too busy making money or pretending to run the country's business. Philly is usually worth the drive, and Baltimore is (and has been for years) a 'diamond-in-the-rough', a very fine and underrated orchestra. As for my statement about being 'all dressed up with no place to go", I was really referring to playing (as opposed to listening) opportunities. Lost of musicians around here who want to play and are capable, but very few gigs --- lots of freebie work like community bands and orchestras (who generally outnumber their audiences at concerts) but little paid work. Good thing we have day gigs.....

I heard that Chicago was actually founded by a bunch of New Yorkers who said "Hmm, we really like the crime and the poverty, but you know, it's just not cold enough."

And I've heard people say that people who say those kind of things are just uneducated.

Mark C., who lives near Detroit and doesn't mind a bit.
