Stopped using Van Doren M14 mouthpiece? Why?
Author: Craig Kroll

I have been using the Van Doren M14 mouthpiece for several months now and am quite satisfied with it. You probably know that this model has been discontinued. It also seems as if models M13 and M15 have become quite popular, If you changed FROM the M14 TO either the M13 or M15, I would like to know why. Also, are either of those models better for "popular" music sound, or for "classical" music sound?

Before I try those 2 new (for me) mouthpieces, I would like to get some feedback from you who have tried them.

Also, what strength reed do you use with them? Presently I am using
Rico Royal strengths 3 and 3 1/2 on my M14.

Thanks much for your time and opinions.

I am currently using the M15 mouthpiece after trying M13, M14, and M13 Lyre.

I noticed very little difference between any of the above, but the M15 does seem to make it a "little" bit easier for me to play in the altissimo range (which has always been a problem for me).

Don't know if that is generally true, or whether its just me and the particular mouthpieces that I have.

I'm using Zonda 3 1/2 soft, for what it's worth.

I'm using the M13 with regular Vandoren 4's. I like it, but I do want to try the M15. The "big" band instrument store near me only has the M1315's 440. I still havn't found a store that caries the M15 442.

I have tried the M15 mouthpiece. To be honest its the only vandoren i would ever use. I can't stand any of the other mouthpieces in the line. This is the only one that remotely compares to that of Greg Smith or Richard Hawkins....

Hello,

I actually have switched from the M13 to the M15 in the past few months. For me, the M15 works a lot better than the M13 on which I played (recently I've wondered if I might've just purchased a bad one, our local music store didn't have a readily available try-before-buy program and I was in a crunch). My M13 didn't have a whole lot of dynamic contrast, as the tone would splat as my dynamics increased, despite my constant effort (through long tone studies) to correct the problem. I found the M15 allowed me to produce a centered sound more easily and over a greater dynamic range (on a good day, I can sometimes do the Oliver Messian crescendos from nothing). It also more accepting to my reeds, allowing me to gain more useable reeds out of a box. These are just my experiences, but I'd like to reiterate that while I was not allowed to play test my M13, I did try a few different M15's (as well as an M14, which I didn't care for) before I purchased the one I currently play on.

Good luck,

Nick Conner

I have played M15 for 1 year 1/2.

I love that perfect focused sound, very coloured and really easy.

But I left it for a B40 because the M15 doesn't allow to develop the sound to the highest FFF.

I thought that M15 was a miracle until I played in a clarinet band with many B45, B40 or 5RVL. The other side of the picture. Very difficult to play loud with it. What a shame, so beautiful sound...

B40 is not too bad when you can try a lot of them and choose one not too "muffled". And it is quite pleasant to play light reeds.

But I keep the M15. One day I will maybe play it again.

Agree with my opinion on M15?
