 Hi,
I'm looking into a used clarinet. It plays very nice, but the serial numbers on the upper and lower joints do not match. Should I be concerned?

Its two different clarinets. It may play just fine, but I would want to sit down with in front of a good tuner and a tuning chart and check it out thoroughly first. Get a tech to look it over and maybe your instructor. Use caution.

....and if the seller didn't mention that up front you should anticipate additional discrepancies...

Replacement sections from the manufacturer have differing serial numbers... didn't Selmer put an asterisk (*) on replacement joints?

Doe the clarinet play well?

. . . and are they at least the same brand and model? If not, and it still plays well in tune and with even response, consider it a miracle and buy it dirt cheap. If it is the same make/model and meets the requirements, it should still be sold at a substantial discount unless there is evidence that it was a factory-selected replacement (perhaps the * that (?) mentioned.
