 Arthritis

What is arthritis exactly? What can cause Juvenile arthritis? Is there any cure? If you have it in your hand, can you still play and advance on clarinet? Is it supposed to be painful?

Cindy,

For what arthritis is (and isn't) you need to check out places that are specialized in that particular topic - a good place to start is The Arthritis Foundation at http://www.arthritis.org/ and their section on Juvenile Arthritis at http://www.arthritis.org/communities/children_young_adults.asp. There's more than one form of Juvenile Arthritis, some with fewer symptoms than others - you need to know which form you're dealiong with.

As to whether or not it will affect playing - it will if it's in the hands, and not for the better. However, in the general reading I did on arthritis right now, mild exercise for the affected area is considered good therapy.

Please check with your doctor for some of the answers, and check reputable organizations for more information.

Good Luck!

Mark C.

Cindy, stay away from the "off-the-shelf" answers to "Arthritis" that you find at the local drug store. They can cause a problem. Take only what your Dr.'s say. (That's plural Doc's as that may be before you.) Don't try to second guess it and treat yourself. Been there--Done that. But I'm no juvenile (not by a heap) and should know better. There are other factors that can mimic Arthritis so if need to, get a second opinion.

there are over 100 forms of arthritis some are more serious then others. in broard terms it is inflamation of the joints. As Mark said go to the experts not a clarinet player.

And if isn't arthritis -- I had a lot of pain in my fingers some time back, and my doctor told me to take cod liver oil every morning. Touch wood, it works. I pass it on for what it's worth.

beejay, it works 'til you belch. Then you'll probably stop taking it.

One thing to keep in mind is that arthritis can also be drug induced. Meaning: one may be taking a drug for something unrelated and arthritis can appear. For example I was taking drugs for my hay fever and I developed arthritis for a year. Once I stopped the hay fever meds, 2 weeks later the arthritis was gone. This was after a rhumatologist declared me incurable. So you never know.

the only joints that this board are an expert on is the upper and lower joint of clarinet. and then you may what to ask a repair person about that also.

Bob -- you can get it in pills. Or you swallow a chaser of orange juice. But I agree, it's ghastly stuff.

beejay; one thing for sure you don't have to oil the bore. Or maybe you already have!

beejay, it may be pyscosomatic(sp) but my Mum used to give me half an orange after "treating" me with Cod-Liver oil. For years I could not pick up an orange without "that taste" coming back into my mouth without even eating it. Go Figure!

Cod liver oil was(is?) supposed to contain vitamin D I believe. My experience with the liquid form is that taking it will make you forget any of your ills ...so as to keep from taking more. I did view a tv program the other night about Lyme disease...which is one cause of juvenile arthritis.
