Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows any music stores in Houston that lets you try out barrels. I'm looking for a 66 mm chadash barrel. How much do these barrels usually run for? The tuning on my current stock barrel is sort of uneven. The throat tones are generally in tune but sometimes run a bit flat, the clarion(especially third space C and the D above it) run very sharp but low E and F are pretty well in tune. Should I stick with a 66 mm barrel or go down to 65? I know I should just try some out and see whatever works, but before I do that I was wondering how each length generally plays. I play on an r-13 with a greg smith mpc and vd v12 4's.
Thanks,
Eric

Pardon the double post, but I was just thinking about this post. Does anyone know of any mail order places that will ship you barrels to try out? Kind of like the system Greg Smith uses?

Greg Smith sells Chadash barrels that he has selelcted for optimum performance with his mpcs--you might try contacting him. Info for contact may be found in the Sponsers section of Sneezy.

I don't think Greg Smith sells barrels separately, but thanks anyways.

Eric, I would try International Musicial Suppliers (1-800-762-1116). They will send out several barrels at a time on approval. You have to put them on your charge card, but you'll be credited for the ones you return when you find one to keep. You get a couple of weeks to try them. They'll let you take mouthpieces that way as well. I've bought from them for years and had very, very good experience with them. Very easy to work with and their prices are below retail.

Hi Eric,
Unfortunately, i don't know of any shops in Houston that even *carry* Chadash barrels. And all the H&H type stores won't let you try anything unless you are going to buy what you play. Houston Band Instrument Company used to carry a few, i think. But they no longer have a physical store. They now run out of their house. And since Dave Wilson ripped me off on a repair job a year or so ago, i no longer give him any of my business, even if he does have the cheapest prices on Vandoren reeds.
Bobbi Prewitt, at Band Instrument Exchange on West Alabama not far from Montrose, could possibly get a few for you to try, but you may have to pay a bit more than mail order retailers charge.
Your best bet would be to go through IMS or WW&BW, or such and get a few to try.
Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. I was born in Houston and am now living in Conroe, but play around town regularly.
Daniel
