Young contributors to this bulletin board often ask us old geezers for information and advice, sometimes I suspect for the purposes of writing a term paper. Could I turn the tables? I'd like to ask people under the age of about 25, anywhere in the world, what made them take up the clarinet in the first place, what kind of music they enjoy playing, what kind of music they enjoy beyond the clarinet from rap to symphonic, and what beyond music are their cultural interests? Do they find themselves having to defend their love of classical music against a philistine world?

ok...
1. in 4th grade, we had to listen to all these tapes of instruments and indentify them. I loved the sound of the clarinet, so I wanted to play it. and I heard some else (a beginer) trying to play oboe...
2.I'll try playing any type of music, but I really like mozart, stravinsky, tchaicovsky, and various others...
3.Classical, a bit of pop, some rock... its a wide variety
4.Theatre(especially musical theatre), umm...
5.yah... especially in middle school ("what are you listen to?" "Reginald Kell." "whos that?" "A clarinet player." "you're such a band geek")

What made me take up the clarinet? In all complete honesty, I wanted to play the sax so I could be like Bill Clinton and Lisa Simpson. Alack and alas (at the time) we didn't have the money to rent a sax. The only instruments we could get were either a flute or clarinet. I dislike the flute, so I picked the clarinet by default. Now that I'm a clarinet performance major, I'm rather glad I made the choice that I did. Right now I'm really enjoying playing anything by Mozart. I don't know why, but his style really appeals to me. In terms of listening, I like everything except polka and country. I love all forms of culture. I can spend hours at the art museum. There is hope for the liberal arts with people like us in the world! Most people I encounter really like classical music, but for the wrong reasons. It reminds them of their favorite tv commercial or movie. I feel I have to defend the fact that the piece was written several hundred years before Gatorade came into existence. (I'm thinking specifically of the commercial that uses the prelude from the Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suite. Grrr...) Great questions though!

1. In fourth grade a bunch of guys from "Band for Today" came to our school and played instruments for us. Once the clarinet was played I knew it was for me. As far as I can remember, I just liked the sound of it.
2. I pretty much stick to symphonic stuff. I can't say I'm a big fan of playing swing or jazz clarinet stuff. Then again, I never have given much effort.
3. Besides classical, I like metal and alternative stuff.
4. I've been in musicals before (Joseph, Sound of Music) but I'm pretty sure I like playing in the pit better.
5. I can't say I've had to defend my fondness for classical, but people give me wierd looks when I say I have orchestra rehearsal...they're like.. "Is that like band?"....or like Julie said..."what are you listening to?" "umm...."Sabine Meyer" "who?"

I played sax originally and kinda out grew it. I got tired of everyone asking me if i played Jazz because i'm not a big jazz fan. So i switched to clarinet and still get asked whether i play jazz, funny thing is i don't mind jazz clarinet. Go figure! newayzzz... i love all types of music especially R&B, Gospel, Pop, and Classical. Because the majority of my friends are musicians i don't really get harassed so much. However when you'd rather listen to a Mahler symphony instead of one of Britney Spear's new singles *shudder* people kinda blink twice and look dumbfounded. Oh well! viva la musica clasical!!!

I'll be a senior next year. I thought the oboe was a clarinet in my younger days, so I told my mom she bought the wrong instrument! I enjoy playing most anything on the clarinet, sometimes even scales! I like many types of music. I don't feel like I have to defend myself because many of my friends either like the same stuff I do or honor my opinions. Hope this helps.

When I was in elementary school I played a recorder. I didn't practice much and made many mistakes but it was fun playing with a bunch of people who enoyed what they were doing. Once during a music lesson a girl came in and said she played the clarinet. She didn't seem too happy about it (foolish her!) but I was in total awe of her (I think I was in third grade at the time). I don't think I even knew what a clarinet was, but the fact that she could do it was enough for me and I swore that one day I too would play that instrument.
Finally when I entered homeschooling in sixth grade I pressured my mom to let me have clarinet lessons. Finally when I was almost in eighth grade I got my chance. I almost let it go too, I realized that it was tough and I couldn't slack off like recorder. Then my music teacher played Eine kleine Nachtmusik and I fell in love with the clarinet forever.
I like classical, Sousa marches, big band (especially Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw), and jazz. Sometimes I listen to popular music. I also listen to a strange mixture of country and rock music from my sibling's rooms, especially from my brother's who is determined to block out my playing with his rock.
Mostly I enjoy playing my own music. I play all kinds of music, classical, rock, and I'm trying to improvise, although currently I am absolutely terrible at it. (sigh) Oh well, more practice. : )
Yes, I do have to defend great music. My brother who is not a musician likes to challenge me about classical music and I keep insisting that there's a reason why it's classical.
My other interests? Writing (or trying to write) novels, HAM radio, schoolwork in my homeschool, and collecting pigs.
Mostly though I am known throughout my family as the clarinetist and I'm proud to be one!

I took up the clarinet because I wanted to play sax, and for some reason everytime I told someone this they said "start with clarinet" so being the naive 5th grader I was, I started with clarinet. I grew to love it, of course. Now that I've doubled on sax for the last couple years, I'm very thankful for the people who told me I had to start on clarinet. ;o)
I love playing concert band stuff, it's the best! Oh and marching band music is fun, cause you get to march (but I'm the Drum Major this year, so no marching for me. Zut!) and play and compete! But I gotta say, I do not like playing pep band tunes anymore. I don't that I could actually live through another time playing "Go Big Orange".
I love almost anything that isn't gangster rap, country, or the boy band/britney spears stuff. Some of my favorite bands are Hootie and the Blowfish, Green Day, Barenaked Ladies, Letters to Cleo, and Sister Hazel. And for some very weird reason I've gotten into listening to marches, Sousa marches. I'm really like Manahattan Beach right now... can't explain why, but I like marches!
As for intrests outside of music, I'm into computers, and hanging with my friends and stuff. Just trying to make life fun. I'm trying to teach myself to use Macromedia's Flash MX so I can do something cool for my website, problem is I don't know what I can do with it, so I'm not sure what I want to do. Woe is me. Perhaps I should stick to HTML. Oh well...
I don't really try to defend classical music, or band or anything. The people I like talking to understand that music is a huge part of my life, and are generally supportive of what I do with it (listening, playing, making it life). As for the other people, I let them think what they will of me.

hi.
1. I took up the clarinet when I was in 5th grade because there was a shortage of clarinets in my school. The band director begged us to play the instrument and so I did. I actually hated the clarinet for a period of time but then in the past few years I became the biggest fan of the clarinet and grew to love it.
2. I like to play classical clarinet especially in small ensembles.
3.I like to listen to R&B.
4. I love sports so I also play in my school's basketball and volleyball team. I also play tennis on the side. I'm into debate and love to participate in Model United Nations.
5. Well, band was actually madantory in my school until last year so I never really faced any problems as being labeled as a 'band geek' but people laugh when they see you bring home the instrument to practice.

Well I start this year as a Music Education Major At VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) and I think I am the only one here who honestly just played the clarinet cause my brother played it and my parents made me! I hated it and never practiced it once. Then I hit 11th grade and decided that "what was the point to do something for 7 years of my life and SUCK AT IT!!!" So one day I decided to start practicing. I started for like 10 minutes a day...then I slowly increased it. I figured I had been wanting to be a chef for so ling and I sucked at it, but the more I cooked the better I got, so then I put that to the clarinet. I eventually got to about 2-3 hours a day...sometimes more. Then I made all state band, and decided the clarinet was the best thing in my life. So now I have changed my major and still work as a chef! I never let kids pick on me about it because I told them I thought it was as deweby as they did lol. I love most music there is very little I dont like. I alreayd stated my cultural interest is other than clarinet is cooking, then the piano.

1.) I picked up the clarinet because my grandfather played it and my dad kinda did. Also, it just seemed to suit me better than the other instruments, although now I'm a doubler on flute and saxophone.
2.) I really like playing in a larger wind ensemble, and more often in smaller chamber groups...I feel that's where I get the most musicality and fun out of the experience of playing.
3.) I love to listen to oldies (I grew up on them!) and just recently have started to like alot of other more modern music. I love classical music and am growing a liking of jazz.
4.) I am really interested in German, History, and English...I'm kinda a school person. I also like to read and cross-stitch whenever I have free time.
5.) I have often had to defend the music I play....I remember in middle school feeling competitive with the school choir and nearly accosting the "civilians" (people who were in neither band or chorus) about who was better. Of course, some choir person showed up and defended their thing. It's always been an issue. I love being a band geek...I'm proud of it!!!

We haven't even gotten started!!
1. I took up the clarinet because I had started trying to arrange music for orchestra (just to pass time), and I wanted to make sure my music was playable. My parents encouraged me in this and bought me my own clarient to work with. I was so pleased by it I locked myself in my room for a week until I could play it decently.
2. For Bb and Eefer, I enjoy sightreading piano solos (namely Bach's inventions and Chopin's waltzes), clarinet solos, and playing improv in a nonserious group. For Bass and Contra, I enjoy playing in wind ensembles and playing basoon solos, trombone solos, tuba solos, you name it!
3. Anything besides rap, really. Rap just doesn't seem like music, especially with what people rap about here in the US. (which I won't get into...)
4. I'm interested in literature, martial arts, and the Internet. I also go and hang out with my friends like any other teenager.
5. How odd is it that most of my friends actually LIKE classical music as much as I do... Those who don't, they tease me, and I let them and tease them back for their rap and hip-hop. But most people understand that classical music is my thing and they leave me alone about it. After all, it's been around longer than any other type of music I can think of, besides tribal music.

28 years ago I was harassed at school for enjoying classical music and playing the flute. A year later I saw the main perpetrator buying a recording of Bach flute sonatas.
I wish somebody had told me that his harassment at the time was pure jealousy .

1. I've been playing piano since I was very young, and wanted to only play one note at a time, and I hate the sound of strings tuning up, and I don't like brass sounds, too many people play saxophone, and my mom played flute and I didn't want her hassling me all the time.
2. I especially like jazz clarinet, particularly Goodman, and the occasional Stoltzman or Shaw. Classical is good, but not all of the time.
3. Besides clarinet, I like jazz (big band stuff, and some other), and good orchestral music, and sometimes postmodern stuff, if I'm in a weird mood.
4. Besides music, I like...well, music's about it.
5. Occasionally people take offense to the fact that I don't like all this pop and rap stuff now, but most of the time they just shake it off, because they know that's how I am and that I'm different from everybody else.

1.) I started to learn the clarinet mainly because i heard a recording of Jack Brymer playing the mozart concerto. The second movement really made me sit up and listen.
2.) I love playing in large orchestra and i also love chamber music. We have just started playing Messiaens, Quatour pour la fin du temp. It is such an inspiring piece!
3.) I listen to most music. I obviously love the clarinet repertoire especially the brahms eb sonata and the poulenc sonata. I also love listening to Jazz (sidney bechet & benny goodman), Mahler, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Stravinsky, Schoenberg & Berg. I also like most modern music like people of my age listen too (i am 17 by the way).
4.) I am studying German, History and English Literature at college in the UK and am hoping to go to music college in 2003/2004. I enjoy reading and sociallsing with all my friends (and the ladies!!).
5.) It depends what circle of friends i am in. If i am with my music group at college there is no need to defend the music i listen to. For example if i am listening Pierrot Lunairre, by Schoenberg i wouldn't have to defend it to another musician friend because they can appreciate it with the same level i can, however if i put the music on at home my parents or other friends will immediately "screw their nose up" at it. Music isn't about just listening to what is at the top of the charts and selling millions of records, its about what personally evokes emotion in you, whether it be Destiny's Child (can't stand them!) or a Shostakovich Symphony or a rachmaninoff piano concerto.

1). I started playing clarinet in 5th grade because in 4th grade they would only let us play stringed instruments and I wanted to try both to see what I liked better.
2). I like playing most anything, I participate in a lot of different band activities so I get to do a little bit of everything. I prefer playing things that go faster, but I don't mind playing the slower, calmer things as long as they give me some form of mental or playing challenge.
3). Beyond band music, I listen to anything from techno music to weezer, the beatles, and marilyn manson. Basically I'm a general music nut and I listen to whatever I'm in the mood for. Just no form of pop or boy bands or anything like that, they insult my intelligence.
4). I'm in high school, in fact I'll be 16 on Friday, so I'm not studying anything yet. However I would like to go into psychology/psychiatry. I play soccer and tennis, and am involved in band activities including marching band, pep band, pit orchestra for the school musical, concert band, symphonic band, I tried out for our junior symphony around here, etc. In the past year I also took up doing colorguard for our marching band and the oboe for conert band. That and I can play about any instrument stuck in front of me yet, except for the piccolo...not very well but if someone shows me how I can usually pull of a scale or two. :0)
5). A lot of people poke fun at me and call me a bandie, band nerd, abnd geek, including my boyfriend and my closer friends. But my boyfriend used to play french horn and most of my closer friends are involved in some form of band or orchestra so I don't mind much, and I don't take offence to it normally anyway; for instance, if you know the american pie movie, I have a shirt that says "And this one time, at band camp..". I take it all in stride and have fun with it....although I probably didn't help myself out any when I dated my section leader last year during marching band *bandcest is bad :0)*.
Okay, well I know that was long and rambling and told way too much about myself, but I hope some part of it helped anyway.

1.) What made me take up the clarinet was the fact that in my band class all other instruments spots were filled up. But now I've been playing for three years and am very glad I didn't chose another instrument!
2.) I enjoy playing classical pieces but I have liked most of the pieces I've played (even though most of them weren't classical).
3.) Mostly new country and classical and a fews songs from other genres of music.
4.) Most of my extracurricular activites involve music in some way. I also have been a part of Girl Guides for about 10 years.
5.) I don't rally have to defend myself because most of my friends are interested in the same music as me.

Hello all. I enjoyed reading everyone's comments, so I thought I'd add my own. I fell in love with the sound of the clarinet in 3rd, when an almighty 5th grader played Memory, from Cats (cheesy, I know) as a solo for the school concert. I picked it up in 4th grade. Chamber music is my favorite kind of music to play, especially Poulenc's stuff. Beyond the clarinet and such, I listen to rock and pop (U2 is my favorite). And although music (from playing clarinet and piano to singing and listening to contempory things) makes up a big chunk of me, fashion and running are my other saving graces. I've often found myself in the position where I *should* defend my music to the ignorant ones, but before recently, I was too much of a crowd-pleaser. I shamefully even quit my instrumental and vocal ensembles for a year in high school because it didn't fit in with the jockette (wannabe) image that I wanted to have. Ugh! But I've wised up, and so have my friends. My friends and family support and respect classical music...and to heck with what everyone else thinks!

1. When asked in band at the start of high school what I wanted to play, I said 'any woodwind'. The clarinet was just a random pick.
2. jazz, movie themes, classical. Didn't enjoy the high school ensemble pieces too much though, possibly because of overplaying.
3. everything except country, rap, pop and capitalist music (ie manufactured boy/girl bands, euk!)
4. cultural? what mean this word?

1. I absolutely adored playing recorder in 4th and 5th grade. I was also very determined...I bounced and caught a tennis ball 2,000 times to try for the Guinness record when I was about 9...so my dad decided I was probably stubborn and persistent enough to handle the clarinet!!
2. I enjoy listening to everything classical, and I love Klezmer, and....I really like Enya
3. Other cultural interests are tap dance, ballet, jazz dance...etc
4. Yeah. But being a band geek rules!!!

Whoa...I wonder what kind of class would have students writing about clarinets for their papers? Sounds kinda of interesting! beejay--I don't think you need information or advice, so are you writing something about us? Well anyway...I'm under 25 so I guess I can answer it!
1. I took up the clarinet because I liked the sound and feel of it, it was really interesting that such a sound could come out of a vibrating piece of wood on a hollow mouthpiece. Also, my cousin plays the clarinet and I wanted to be like her.
2. I really like playing some of the concert band pieces, even though there are people on this board who say that concert band will die out. Also, I like orchestral music, which is even better to listen to and often more complicated.
3. I like to listen to current Hawaiian music, which is a lot like Reggae, only it's nicer and more melodic.
4. Cultural interests beyond band??
5. I hvaen't encountered too many philistines...most people I know are encouraging and a lot of my friends are in band also. I'm glad the place that I live doesn't have a lot of people like that.

You are very suspicious, and I guess you have every reason to be. But to answer your question, no I'm not writing about you. I'm just trying to get a better understanding of the world in which I live. I'm trying to compare views with those I get from young people here in France, including my own son and his circle and my colleagues in the orchestra in which I play. I think the field in which I work (media) tends to categorize young people and oversimplify, and I do not believe this is the correct approach. Call this exercise a professional reality check for me So far, I've been very impressed with the diversity and strength of the replies by the way.

1.Ok I'll admit it....My picking up the clarinet was one of those mother/teacher descions behind your back. ("oh, by the way you're playing the clarinet next year, bea") I had absolutly no idea what a clarinet was before I started. But I have become an accomplished clarinetist for only playing for 4 years-somehow I pulled off an okay playing of the Mozart Concerto (first two movements)
2. I like to play mostly classical and a little John Williams-don't laugh
3. I listen to alot of different music. Mostly Genesis, Moxy Fruios (sp?), a variety of classical stuff, Barenaked Ladies, They Might Be Giants, Cranberries...........
4. Besides clarinet, I ski and write poetry
5. It's a wonderful life being a music freak!!!

1. I took up the clarinet because I couldn't make a decent sound on the trumpet when they showed all of the instruments to us all.
2. I enjoy playing romantic period stuff, especially by the Russians. My favorite peice that I've played is the first part to Russian Easter Overture (by the great Rimsky-Korsakov of course). I also like some of the modern Wind Ensemble stuff (Chester by William Schuman). I also like to learn stuff off of the radio and CDs as to impress people, and to ease the boredom. So far my greatest hit is "For the Longest Time" by Billy Joel.3. I like to listen to mostly classical-type music. Right now, I seem to be stuck on the symphonies of Shostakovich, partly due to the fact that I just purchased a set of CDs containing his entire symphonic cycles. I can listen to the 11th over and over again. Apart from that, I listen to everything from the Mozart Requeim, to Bartok, to Prokofiev, to Handel, to Albeniz. I also like some Billy Joel, Springstein, Queen, and a few assorted others.
4. I am going to the University of Michigan for Engineering, if that could be considered a cultural interest. I also like history, math, and everything else academic, with the exception of literature. Especially Shakespeare. I like Orwell and other political satire and parodies, but that is about it.
5. I don't feel I need to defend my tastes against the world. It is a taste, like any other type of music. People understand that I like classical music just as something that they usually don't listen to, just as if I listened to country, or rap. They think it is all just little string quartets and such. But once they hear a little more modern stuff coming out of my car, they see that classical music can be a lot more exciting than Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.

1.) Ha- I actually started in 6th grade in percussion, and stuck with it and practiced semi-frequently (there's only so much you can do with a pair of wooden sticks). I mangaged to make first band all-state my sophomore year in high school. Anyhow, it was there and at other music clinics and camps that I started listening to the clarinet section, and all the different parts between them. Plus there were some people with fancy clarinets with cool barrels and mouthpieces that, for some reason, interested me. I actually formally took up clarinet my junior year and made all-state (although I had been playing 2 years before then, in 9th grade).
2.) I enjoy playing a lot of classical stuff - for instance, right now I am trudging through (but I enjoy it) Weber's Concertino.
3.) I love classical music, I just haven't bought that many classical CD's. I love composers like Copland as well. Debussy is one of my favorite composers, especially for piano. I mainly listen to Christian music, and concert band stuff sometimes.
4.) Music is my main interest, definitely, but I took a mission trip recently to Spain and fell in love with the country, so I hope to go back for a while anyway. I like playing the piano, too, along with spending time with my friends. A lot, well probably 90% of the people I spend most of my time with are also in the band, so I don't feel like I have to defend myself, because I really don't.

1. I took up clarinet because it was the ONLY thing I sounded good on in the 6th grade:)
2. I love to play everything and anything, with the exception of the EXTREMELY modern stuff. Some of my favorites are Capriccio-Sutermeister, The Osborne Rhapsody, Poulenc Sonata, Weber anything, Love Mozart Duets, quintets, solos, All sorts of orchestral stuff, Love Debussy's the Girl with the Flaxen Hair, on clarinet, piano or anything. I ADORE Jupiter from the Planets, I love the huge Non-Legato Melody in the Middle, I also love the clarinet solo in Waltz of the Flowers among TONS AND TONS of other things I like to play.
3. Listen to alot of Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Classical stuff, NPR, Harry Conick Jr., Moulin Rouge Sdtrk., Duke Ellington, lots and LOTS of old Jazz stuff, I love Marching Band Music too, cause I'm a big Drum Major nerd:-D.
4. Other cultural interests, hmmmm...Religion, Politics, dance, kickboxing, Teaching, School, UGA FOOTBALL:) and shopping at the GAP.
5. No not really, I've found most people have something they love like I love music so they can relate. And people like to see someone excited about what they do, and I am as excited as they come, so I don't find much bad feedback about that.

1. In 5th grade, my Grandmother gave me her oboe. I wanted to play it, but since our band teacher did not know how to play oboe I took up clarinet like my dad instead.
2 I enjoy playing just about anything, though I really love dixieland and other jazz. Also, slower passages with tons of emotion needed I love to play. Its very odd starting to cry while you are playing.
3. I enjoy classical and jazz, as well as a few choral pieces.
4. No one understands how a high schooler could possibly like classical more than the latest pop album! I often defend my love of instrumental music. Its also amuzing to, when forced to listen to pop, analyze the harmonies and the instruments in the background aloud, until the one forcing you to listen is driven insane and shuts it off...:)

Yes... I tend to analyze pop music like that a lot... people just give me a funny look... I do that with movie music too... like I'll be watching a movie, and randomly go "Hey thats a bassoon!" or whatever... and my friend and I went to see HMS Pinafore( sp?) and ended up conducting half of it from our seats. We guessed it was either in 3/4 or 6/8 and after the performance we asked our teacher (who was playing clarinet in the pit) what the time signature was and it was 6/8.
yeah... being a band geek is great fun!

In english we had to watch a movie that was very boring, and a friend and I got to analyzing the music from the background. We started making comments about the chords and time signatures, and what instruments were being played. Apparently we were talking too loud, because our teacher shut off the movie and told us that band belongs only in the band room, and should not enter hers. It was fun, but needless to say we got in a bit of trouble.

yeah... I'd probably get in big trouble for doing that in class. I've done it in movie theaters before, and on many occasions, got popcorn thrown at me.
