Teaching the student or the parent?
Author: Anders Malaberg

i have taught professionally for over 10 years and wonder how many clarinet teachers out there end up with parents who are more fanatics becuase junior is a prodigy in their mind(s)? The problem recently came to a head due to the fact the parents began dicatiating the music they felt he could do. I then decided that enough was enough and stopped teaching a particular student because of the nagging parent thing. Junoir in this case is about 17 and is talented but the parents control everything!!!

I haven't had your problem, but I did have a father who wanted to start a band. He would play guitar, and I would be "lead" on clarinet. All we had to do was find a bass and set. We could practice in his garage. The kid was mortified, and the mom was more than a little concerned. We kept changing lesson times , but the dad would still find out and interupt the lesson with his "Hits form the 60's" fake book. I finally had to drop the student.
Sometimes the money just isn't worth it.

Probably about 1 in 10 students have impossible parents. There is no use even trying to explain that their version of a prodigy is not the same as anyone else. Having taught for about 25 years has taught me one thing. Suggest that the problem parent try another teacher for their precious prodigy. There are always more students to take their place. It is a tough enough way to earn a living without unreasonable parents. You can't change their minds or talk sense to them either.
