hi, I've been playing the clarinet for almost three years now and i've never really had any major problems with it. But recently my clarinet has been screeching when I go from and A to a C for example (not the really high C, the one that's sort of in the middle). As you can see I don't really the terminology. anyways it also happens with others notes in the higher register and I was hoping it is something machanical but i can't find anything wrong with it. So I was wondering if maybe it had to do with the brand name that I have. It's a Jupiter. I don't know if anyone has ever heard of it but oh well. So if anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
Gabrielle

Sounds to me like it might a reed/embouchure problem - have you discussed this with your teacher to see if you can replicate the problem in her/his company? You may very well have something as simple as a bad reed.

Since it was playing "ok" before and this "screeching" is a new thing, there is probably a leak somewhere--have your local repairperson look it over. Leaks are difficult to spot just by "looking it over", even for experianced clarinetists. Tech people use lights and "feeler" tapes to detect them--stuff most of us do not routinely carry in our junk compartments. Shouldn't mean a major overhaul, just a "playing condition" check up and tweek. Jupiter instruments--at least the ones I saw in my school program--are not noted for their quality of construction and are prone to easy damage or misaliegnment problems. Also, like Diz said, try a different reed and check your embouchure. Good Clarineting!!!!

Thanks guys, I'll take my clarinet in this weekend. But refering back to what Diz said, I have changed reeds several times but to no avail!

Ask your favorite tech to check it out for you :)
Jupiter clarinets are okay, saxes are excellent.

I have seen merit in Jupiter saxes and flutes but not in their clarinets, but perhaps a recent model may be better.

Whic C do you mean, C5 or C6? The code is at the top of this page in red.

And do you mean going UP from A or DOWN from A?

A good friend was having squeek-blowing problems. When he finally let me see his horn, I replaced the highest-trill-key pad [broken skin, not readily visible] and "its like new"!! Don

I agree, most probably a leak.

Gordon it was an A up to a C, both in the clarion register. I don't know if that helps but I don't really understand how that numbering thing works.

Definitely a Jupiter thing. They last about 3 years and then fall to bits. They dont tell you that at the shop when you hand over the loot.
