Can anyone tell me anything about Chedeville clarinets? What about RS Williams & Sons Co clarinets? I am considering purchasing one of the two off ebay and want to know what I am getting into.

I've got an old Edmond Chedeville wood Bb clarinet (Boehm system) awaiting restoration --- estimated 1920s vintage (with wraparound register key) ---- seems reasonably well made but nothing terribly special, won't know how it plays until I'm done overhauling it. Apparently there were a few branches of the Chedeville family in the music biz (kind of like the Moennigs), I've also got some old Charles Chedeville reeds, and of course there are the well-regarded Chedeville mouthpieces and mouthpiece blanks (I don't know which Chedeville made those). Never heard of RS Williams & Sons, that may just have been the name of a music store that distributed clarinets made by ???.

Thanks David. I too have heard about the renowned Chedeville mouthpieces but never an instrument made by Chedeville, that is why the interest for background info. Same with Williams. Thanks again for the info you shared.

I found a few references to RS Williams & Sons on the web. It looks like they were a large instrument maker/dealer in Canada from about 1850 up to about 1930.
Try a search on "Williams and Sons" at http://www.nlc-bnc.ca
Of course this reveals nothing about the clarinet, but it may help in sleuthing.
