I am trying to get my flute and clarinet reconditioned by rocal repairman in a music shop, but I don't know how much he is qualified to repair woodwinds. What should I ask or look for to find out if he will be able to do a good job on my instruments?

"Word of mouth" is an excellent source. What does your local clarinet quintet etc, think of him?

Ask all the WELL-ESTABLISHED players and teachers in your district and a pattern will emerge. Don't trust only one or two recommendations. Some players recommend a best-mate butcher! - probably out of ignorance, and commission!

Word of mouth works for me -- then, if I'm given a "bum steer" (I hope this means the same thing in American English!) - I'll give my source grief (not pleasant).
