Hello again everyone. I'm back with yet another question. I recently sold that Selmer Signet Soloist that I was complaining so much about, and now I need to find a new clarinet. I was planning on buying an E-11 sometime in the future, but recently I came across a "Yamaha YCL-72CX" on Ebay for not much more than I was going to pay for the E-11. Would it be wise to look into this, or should I just stick with the E-11. I wasn't able to find anything about this particular model on Yamaha's website. Does anyone know anything about it? The seller says it is in good condition, but naturally I emailed him with some questions to confirm it. I'm just curious as to whether anyone has any opinion as to which I should buy?
Thanks,
John

Yamaha YCL-72CX is professional level instrument. The E-11 is good intermediate level instrument. I definitely would go with Yamaha if the price is almost the same.

Yamaha's blow fairly tight. Just beware they are not going to blow as free as a french instrument but they produce a nice tone. Good solo instruments and not bad for jazz.

All of the Yamahas that I have played are very nice horns. Smooth, even response and outstanding tuning. I have never found them to be "tight". I have actually always felt they are very even and blow very nice, fairly free. I would think that this would be a great choice.

i thought (and you know, i'm often wrong.....) that the "72" model (which was a very very good clarinet- my 2nd clarinet in one of the orchestras i play in has one, she sounds GREAT and plays very well in tune) didn't have either the "Custom" stamped on it, or the "CX" as part of the model number... try looking for it just as a "YCL 72". Actually, now i think of it i can name two proffessional clarinet players who have used this clarinet in orchestras, and not just for a few months before changing back to their Buffet.
E11..... can be a pretty good horn but is quite inconsistent, and to be honest, a bad one is worse than a Yamaha plastic. (i recently played through about 6 brand new ones and was shocked)

It's hard to play in any orchestra on anything but the Buffet because of intonation problems and tone matching--at least that's been my experience the last several years. That's why I went back to Buffets. When you play from place to place and never have the same partner, the Buffet is sure to be approved by the director. I had one director who really, really profoundly hated my Symphonie VII. I showed up the next day with the Buffet and the world was great again. He couldn't say enough good things about my tone, etc. He feels the same way about the Yamahas, by the way.
