My audition for the local youth orchestra is a month tomorrow and I've pretty much fallen into a state of panic. My teacher won't be back until late May so I'm pretty much left on my own to prepare myself for this audition. The requirements are 2 contrasting pieces and a 2-3 octave scale of your choice. Scales aren't a problem, I know almost all of them by memory and can play them at an somewhat adequate speed (eight notes, at least 132 per quarter note). However, I haven't even finalized which pieces I'm playing! So far, I'm working on the 2nd mvmnt from the Mozart, and the 1st Scuhmann Fantasy Piece. However, I'm not confident as to whether or not those two really contrast each other. Should I just (attempt to) learn something else instead of the Schumann?

You might be best performing two contrasting movements both in tempo and in style. Either you have chosen will show off your legato playing. I suggest you play something faster and more modern (Hindemith, Poulenc?) as a contrast.

I don't think Schumann and Mozart is a good idea together. they are very alike although from diffrent periods.
I agree with diz, something like poulenc would be fantastic. Or Malcom Arnold perhaps???

What else do you know that you may be confident playing in a month? I think it's probably better to go in with two pieces that you can play very well, even if they don't contrast as much, than something that's significantly weaker. Can you substitute the 3rd movement of the Mozart?

By "contrasting," the audition people mean, at the very least, something slow and something fast. The Mozart 2nd movement is slow, and the first Schumann Fantasy Piece is moderately slow. That's not enough contrast. If you want to stick with the Schumann, at least do # 3, but I wouldn't do the Schumann at all. It's too "serious."
Like diz, gemmaelizabeth and Michaela, I advise playing something less serious. Even if you've played the Weber Concertino to death, the audition committee hasn't heard you play it. You need something that's cheerful and lets you show your technique.

I wish i had those expectations for the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra! Instead I have to prepare A compleate movement, like mozarts first then three orchestra excerpts coupled in with some various sight reading stuff. All infront of a panel of like six people, video camera and some other audio recording device.
Personally I don't think the first movement of Shumann and the 2nd movement of the mozart clarinet concerto really contrast each other. Yes you can vary tempo's ect but theres only a reasonable amount before it gets unprofessional.
Im not going to even offer advice on what to pick because not only do you have to pick it out but you need to learn it. Like i couldn't even comprehend learning mozart from the very begining again, i have put in so much work on it. I would say to ask your teacher. Yes he or she is away, but try to get ahold of that person some how. If you can't, honestly this board is the last place to ask becusae you will get so confused becuase of the variation in opinions. If you can't get ahold of you teacher, call someone else that you can trust.
