Ok, so we all know about Buffet clarinets. What about their saxophones? I don't see muuch of them around. Would they be considered an off brand in the saxophone world? I only ask because I'm a band director and a parent questioned me about them the other day.

I CAN'T SAY TOO MUCH ABOUT THEM. BUT FROM WHAT I'VE HEARD ABOUT THEM BY FRIENDS WHO PLAY SAX THEY'RE NOT A BAD BRAND TO HAVE, JUST MORE LIKELY TO BE USED BY BEGINNERS. YES, I GUESS YOU COULD SAY AN OFF BRAND.HOPE THIS SHEDS SOME LIGHT. WHERE DO YOU TEACH?

Well, I own and play a Leblanc and a Selmer clarinet - so I'm decidedly using an "off brand" - but I don't give a tinker's cus about what anyone else thinks. If the sax works for you, use it.

Monica - I teach in the Chicago area. Diz, I play selmers for my clarinets and love them. Totally agree that it doesn't matter what it is as long as it works for you! I'm just curious.

Buffet made a good saxophone for a while. It was the SuperDynaction. I have a SuperDynaction tenor that plays better than the Mark VI Selmer that I sold after getting the Buffet. Boosey and Hawkes bought out the Keilworth company, the maker of the Superba I and Superba II saxophones from Germany. This is now Boosey and Hawkes "Pro Line". Now the Buffet saxes are import knock-offs and, IMHO, not a very good line. I'm not including the Keilworth in the latter statement. I think that Yanagasawa makes the best sax overall right now.

My husband's first "good" saxophone was a Buffet that he used in college. He sold it not too long ago. In his opinion, he now prefers Yamaha, Selmer, and Yanigasawa--he has one of each.

diz- i never knew selmer was an "off brand". every one i know plays a selmer.i'm not sure i agree with you on that one.ya know i was just thinkin' about something someone had said once(my mom, she doesn't know to much about instruments but what she says matters to me), it was this,"it not the instrument that makes the musician but the musician that makes the instrument". which simply means that you don't always have to have the best to be the best. i have an old model selmer and it is my favorite clarinet i've ever had the pleasure of playing on. i still use it right now.thanx for the info Cory.

I've not played saxophone for years, but when I did I had a Buffet prestige, which I considered was the best thing around at the time (80's), it was certainly the most expensive! Do they not make these anymore?

I have a buffet alto which I purchased from my teacher at the time (around 1962). He was a professional musician who played it for many years in a big band. So at least some of the older horns were professional quality. My information is that the buffet sax of the period, but only those made in paris, were of good quality. However, most musicians seemed to prefer the Selmer super action and later Mark vi.

Mark VI's are so inconsistent. I see them all go for high $ on eBay, but I wouldn't buy one UNLESS I could play test it. I have a great alto, but my tenor never did play with good intonation. I bought it used at a "good" price in the early 70's. I owned it until I found a great Buffet SuperDynaction that was absolutely MINT. The differnce is amazing. It has great intonation and a much richer tone. I still say the best sax going today, however is the Yanagasawa.

The newer Buffet Saxes are okay, but they are no better than a Intermdiate level. The older ones are great, and I've heard many people use them.
