New "Sneezy" servers update
Author: Mark Charette, Webmaster
Date: 2002-04-11 20:40

The servers arrived a couple of weeks back and their burn-in is now complete. I am now starting to install all the software that was on the "old"
Sneezy, partition it onto the two machines (previously there was effectively only one machine), and finish all the customizations. This is a tedious process - I spent the last 6 or 7 years tuning the system with customizations, and moving those if they apply to the new system just takes time. They are all localized, however, so it shouldn't be a horrible problem. The machines will be driven from Texas to Michigan on May 2-3 and installed the next week. Their operation will be staged in rather slowly to make sure that any glitches will only affect a small portion of their duties.

The two machines are being partitioned into a

1) web server/ bulletin board/ other web utilitities and
2) mail/ database/ indexing server.

The machines are connected together with 2 ethernet ports each via a switch, which means that the two machines can talk to each other very quickly (200 Mbit/sec full duplex) over a private network, and more slowly to the public network. What this boils down to is database searches should now be an order of magnitude (at least) faster than before and re-indexing during the US Eastern Time evenings should have a barely perceptible effect on web users.

I have received a number of offers from people to be board members. I thank all that applied. I have selected four from the applicants who applied to be board members - I've only had time to contact one officially, so I'll put the names out in a short while. Those four people will be assisting in the organization and other efforts of a new, improved "Sneezy.Org" in the near future. There are a couple other people that will become direct assistants to the care & feeding of the machines and my "backup" should something untoward befall me.

As this new endeavor goes forward I'd like to take the time to thank each and every one of you for the support over the last few years in contributing to the "Sneezy.Org" effort. If we can get the 501 (c)(3) status as a non-profit organization here in the US it will open up new chances of promoting our chosen wind instruments.
