Some time within the last couple of months, there was a discussion on R-13 quality and specific serial number ranges were mentioned. As I recall, this discussion was about overall quality, ie: workmanship, intonation, etc. I've searched the archives and can't locate this info. I'm actively looking to buy a used R-13 and need this serial number info to help me choose an instrument. All help appreciated. Thanks.

The one that costs the most, and has the longest pedigree of professors will always be the best. If your teacher is selling a beat up horn for twice the retail price - that's the one to get!
Only people with advanced degrees can tell. Never trust a tuner.
The newest R13s that have been refined over the course of 50 years
are in no way as good as the Vintage Years.
I would recommend the clarinets that no one has played for any period of time over the past 40 years as being the place to start.
Especially good are the clarinets that keep getting passed from teacher to student... worn plating, crack repairs and sloppy keywork are all indications that the instrument has been blown out.
I wouldn't trust any instrument that has been owned by less than 10.
Watch out for the huxters out there, trying to help out.
Only the most upscale boutique stores will do.

S.B.'s menagerie of suggestions reminds me of just how good it would be if every clarinet came with a certificate of provenance, so we could see who had played it before buying. How much would that old Benny Goodman Selmer be worth if you could prove it had been the one used on all those recordings? Or perhaps that is just the same as the veneration of saintly relics.
