 Enigma Variations
Author: R. Simpson

This year, the Wind Ensemble band at my HS will be playing Enigma Variations for UIL Competition. Does anyone have any advice about the Bass Clarinet part (or any part, for that matter) in this piece?

Any advice would be appreiciated...

Thanks

I know the Enigma Variations quite well - but not in an arrangement for military band (whatever). I wouldn't be overly worried about the bass part - but thank your stars your not playing solo clarinet - because if that's where the violin parts have ended up then they will be very difficult.

It's a cool piece... use FEELING (to quote my director)

Yes, I've played the first oboe part in the Enigma Variations in the Local 47 orchestra in Los Angeles for the past two weeks. It's not so difficult as some other pieces I can think of. Some parts of it sound like they were first written for the piano and then transcribed for orchestra. Good luck!

We are talking band, not orchestra, right?

I have played parts of the band version. The arrangement we did only had about 6 of all the variations. I don't remember it being incredibly difficult, but I could be blacking out the bad parts.

We are doing a band arrangement that was transcribed from an orchestral version. We are playing theme, v1, v4, v5, v11, v9 (nimrod), v14 finale.

The hardest parts for bass clarinet seem to be in var. 11--playing the 8th and 16th notes very fast and stacatto; and in the finale in ms 160--the 16th and 32nd note runs.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help

I don't actually agree with the above post.... but yes, orchestral arrangements more band can sound absolutely awful unless the band is exceptionally good. To play the Elgar well you need to remember that it is not a huge piece written for band, so don't get too carried away. Some of the variations can sound really heavy and lifeless when played by band. My advice in general would be to listen to how your conductor wants it musically, and to practise the technically difficult parts. You'll be fine, don't worry so much!
