 Buying A clarinet

I sure got an education in buying a clarinet today! I went into a very good local music store and announced that I wanted to buy an intermediate or entry level professional instrument. The salesperson brought me 2 Buffet E-11's and a Selmer CL 200 to try. I compared each of them to my old Buescher, which I had brought along for comparison testing, and none of them came close to the sound of my instrument. I, then, enquired about R-13's. He brought me two to try. The first one didn't play as well as mine, BUT the second was wonderful, good intonation, response, and great tone with both my VanDoren B-45 and 5JB mouthpieces. I walked out of the store with that R-13!

An important lesson to anyone buying a new instrument. Don't buy 'till you try, and make sure what you are buying is truly better than what you have.
