Reeds on Bb and A

I use a number 4 reed with a Bay mouthpiece. I get a nice, warm, sound on my Bb, but when I switch the mouthpiece to my A clarinet, the sound becomes airy down low. What's up?

Sorry to be the one to tell you, but I'm sure it has to do with either a problem with your A clarinet (mechanical, or just not a very good piece of wood) or the fact that your A clarinet might be much more resistant than your Bb. It's always good to try to get the Bb and the A to match tone quality/resistance to some extent. Of course, I do know a clarinetist that uses a different reed/mouthpiece setup on the Bb and the A, so he avoids the whole issue of switching. I personally find that very weird/undesirable, but whatever works.

I use a bay too, w/ a 4 vandoren v12 reed.

I found i was having those problems too...until i realized that my A clarinet had MAJOR leakage problems in my lower joint. Take it to get repaired...you may be suprised. if your reeds work on your Bb, they should work on your A...although i do find that i lean towards the softer reeds when i have to play on both.

I have similar problems but i know my A needs a good brannenization (poor mechanics), and its a bit more resistant.Another thing, are your b flat and A the same make and model?
