 Yamaha Double Case

Here's a follow up report. I've been using my new Yamaha light-weight case, for about four weeks now, with no problems whatsoever to report. The case itself has a TECH Traveler logo under one of the Yamaha stickons and was probably originally meant for carrying a laptop. The conversion for clarinet carry is well thought out with room for two mpcs, four barrels, detached storage for the bells and a little section for "junk." The pockets inside the case are usable for small objects, but will not accomodate larger stuff like my reed case (Harrison 12) nor my reed knife, without putting undo pressure on the clarinets keys. I have attached a small travel case to the shoulder strap for packing my single K & M clarinet stand (inside the bell is too tight), reed knife, and pencils. The large inside "music" compartment is unsusable and makes the case too "stuffed" to close. The outside top music compartment holds my tuner, reed case and toothbrush. The backside compartment holds my rehearsal folder. The total carry weight is extremely light on my shoulder--much more comfortable than my old LeBlanc double case with the same gear. It is also conviently smaller--great carry-on size. The downside is that it does not offer the same rigid protection that the hardside cases offer, but then again, I am very careful not throw my cases around nor do I let them be checked with my regular luggage on flights. I have seen the Bam cases and I think that the offer more protection, but they are larger and "balkier." I also had to add a couple of strings on either side of the case lid to keep it from flopping completely open during assembly and packing of my clarinets. Bottom line: I give these cases a "thumbs up" and report that I am happy with mine. The cost, again, at IMS was $130.00--less than a new custom mpc. Hope this is of interest and help--Good Clarineting!!!!!!!!

I purchased this same case about 4 years ago. It's finally starting to show signs of wear and tear, but still functions wonderfully. I too realized that the inside compartments are completely useless except for things like my swab and neckstrap and a couple of pencils.

Please be careful with what you place in the outside top folder area (the one with the flap). I'm fairly sure that the amout of music I was cramming in there is single-handedly responsible for the alignment problems that I had on both joints on my Bb and the lower joint on my A.

Also, the foam around the handle will begin to tear within a year and a half and will eventually need to be removed entirely. I've simply wrapped an old, HUGE swab around the remaining handle strap. It's worked for a year now.

One last thing: people will continually comment on how small your double case is. I think most of them are jealous. :-)
